  • Global Milan and its Gateways

  • From our research into “Milan, node in the global network” we have received a strong impression of Milan as a “gateway-city”. This second step of the Milan Initiative aimed to develop and implement this idea. That can be done if one is able to review Milan’s main strategic functions from the angle chosen, viz. as a “gateway”.

Measuring the global (or potentially global) ebb and flow means knowing what “gateways” the stream is flowing through.

Gateways are observable functional, social and organisational systems. As a global city, Milan can thus be represented as a matrix criss-crossed by global and local knowledge. Gateways are the junctions points, cells in the matrix.

The gateways of the Milanese global city/region studied are:

    1. The logistic and transport system
    2. The airport system
    3. Fiera Milano and the international trade fair complex
    4. The design system
    5. The research/innovation system
    6. The university system

To achieve its targets the project set up a workgroup co-ordinated by Professor Paolo Perulli and assisted by a scientific committee composed of:

Neil Brenner, New York University, NY, Usa
    Peter Taylor, Loughborough University, UK
Pierre Veltz, Ecole National de Ponts et Chaussées, France

On February 19, 2007 the workgroup presented midterm research to the scientific committee and a selected public.

In May 2007 the research Milan and its gatewasy was concluded and handed to the Chamber of Commerce of Milan.
